1. Japanese Geography: major islands, make up of the geography
2. The Great Change: the changes made by Shotoku and ideas scholars brought back from China/Korea, especially government (of which some ideas will relate to what they learned last year when discussing China)
3. Religions: Shinto, Zen Buddhism, Pure Land Buddhism
4. Arts (what made each special to the Japanese): poetry-haiku, fashion, origami, architecture, and painting; Lady Murasaki - Tales of Genji
5. Historic events: Mongol invasion, opening of Japan to foreigners, isolation, use of firearms
6. Important Japanese families: Yamato and Minamoto
7. Japanese Feudalism: Class structure, how classes interacted, characteristics of each class; Bushido
